Safe Renovations

Maintaining Safe Conditions during Do It Yourself Renovations

DIY renovations can be a fun project that saves money. But, renovations can disturb lead paint, asbestos,  and mold which can be hazardous.

Lead Paint

Common renovation, repair, and painting activities that disturb lead-based paint (like sanding, cutting, replacing windows, and more) can create hazardous lead dust and chips which can be harmful to adults and children. Home repairs that create even a small amount of lead dust are enough to poison your child and put your family at risk.  See additional guidance:

Asbestos

Do not try to remove asbestos on your own. If you suspect that your project may disturb asbestos call a  licensed professional in MA.

Mold and Moisture

If the mold is more than 10sq feet call a contractor. However, for smaller amounts of mold a solution of baking soda and vinegar will work for non-porous surfaces. Porous surfaces like sofas and carpets may have to be thrown away. More information on mold
